I think this could be interpreted pretty straightforwardly as being about someone being left on their own and being so confused by it as to make a mess of the tasks the other person has always done. They try to get over their feelings of distance by telling themself that reality is like this, until they finally get a perspective on life again.
However I have a feeling that all this is merely an elaborate metaphor for some bigger picture of the world, the exact signifcance is known only to the singer.
