I dont believe the song is about "literally" killing his girl. I think its more of a metaphore for "killing" the relationship. For one thing, he uses kind words when describing her (such as "likes me best", "Darling" ). Also, the line "All for love, you suffocate" has nothing to do with her "choking", but rather her suffocating Rivers by telling him "what to drink, not to smoke" etc. etc.... and she is doing this because she loves him so much. And finally, choking on your tears.... This is a dead on 100% acurate description of someone crying uncontrollably. Especially when you consider he killed the relationship with someone who was as in love with him as this song describes.
