although it is not very likely (according to nicky wire enola/alone is a melancholic song inspired by looking at a picture taken at his wedding of several people of whom two - richey edwards and philip hall - were not in his life anymore), mirroring 'alone' to 'enola' may partly have been inspired by the fact that THE PLANE THAT DROPPED THE ATOMIC BOMB ON HIROSHIMA WAS CALLED 'ENOLA GAY'. At 2:45 a.m. on Monday, August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber, the 'Enola Gay', took off from Tinian, a North Pacific island in the Marianas, 1,500 miles south of Japan. Just before take-off, the plane's nickname was painted on its side.
