I believe that this song is about a couple where one of the members attached so profoundly to the other, that that person wanted them to be together forever, with nothing trying to split them apart...
such as your gf or bf getting upset because you went out with your friends, or because you were hanging out with a member of the opposite sex...
oh, and echelon doesn't mean wholy formation of ranks of an army, or army terms... it can also mean a ranking system... such as the man bieng the breadwinner, thus he is the top dog of the household, or vice versa... such as the president is the top echelon, and the newborns today are the base echelon... such as you go into a hotel, and ask for a floor on the 6th echelon... they'll most likely give you a hotel on the 6th floor... just make sure it's a nice hotel when you do it ;)
