To me it sounds as if he's battling with an addiction that suppresses through the withering of anothers patience. He feels the need to control them to obtain a sense of relief. In doing this he's tearing himself apart, his relationships, as well as the true purpose of his intentions. After all is said and done and there's nothing left for him to manipulate and cling to, he feels shame and disgust in cost of his actions. These natural pain killers only build upon the torment he possesses. In addition, his addiction to the drug won't cease. It's just a battle that can only be conquered in vain. So as he withdraws from all these feelings and actions, he wants and craves the isolation as he becomes completely driven yet closed off as he suffocates. Kind of sick if you think about it.
