It took me several listens to wrap my head around these lyrics. I'm still not sure I've got it, but here goes.
This song addresses the sense of feeling like you're in a fishbowl after a breakup, when all kinds of 3rd parties gossip and discuss your personal affairs like it was any of their business in the first place. And all the while, you just want to put the whole relationship to rest and not deal with any of the formalities of 'staying friends' or preserving your reputation amongst your ex's circle of friends.
"you're in debt and completely fooled, that you can look into the mirror and objectively rank your wounds.
sewing circles are not solely based in trades of cloth: there's spinsters all around here taking notes, reporting on us."
This is so heartbreakingly true. Debt is not to be taken literally here. The loss can refer to parting ways with someone you once loved, or even the time invested into the relationship that failed. You think you can objectively evaluate the extent of your losses, but don't even realize that theres a force out there complicating things even further: the "spinsters", or the rumor mill, everyone out there gossiping about your split, taking sides and casting judgement. Information travels so fast sometimes that you're helpless in even defending your own position. And the person with whom you've just split wants to remain friendly, but all you want to do is forget about this whole awful mess and move on.
