i would like to agree with gregg, being a christian and all, but it seems that in this song and also in 'Questioned Apocalypse', Spatch is exploring their negative thoughts on christianity. The picture put forth in this song depicts a boy who fell into christianity and was taken down and drowned by it(hence "its a silent steeple that carries us down" its silent because God is silent and does not seem to respond or benefit him and its carrying him down--drowning him). At the same time others flew past him and enjoyed life. The sea, being christianity or God himself "wouldnt so much as reply"..this could mean he dove into christianity and it did nothing for him except hold him back while others were living their lives (also referring to the "silent" thing). "We were going with the wind in our hair and we didnt want to look back cuz if we did we would not care" suggests that others who didnt make the mistake of going into the ocean were enjoying living their lives without Christianity bogging them down..The "sail on, take it back" seems to be the boy saying "sail on" dont stop and make the mistake i made ...because he wants to "take it back"...I might agree with gregg if it wasnt for "Questioned Apocalypse" in which Spatch definitely explores their doubts about christianity and their temptation to "change their minds"
