I don't know if it's because it's obvious for you or almost no one likes the song, but no one has posted the meaning...
In my opinion this is about an unexpected broke up or some faded ilusions of a posible relationship...
"No cross to bear/No reason to care/My life was all up in air/Four to the floor I was sure/Never seing clear"
I think that this part means like, being "up in the sky", with no preocupations (no cross to bear, no reason to care), dreaming, seing only what he wanted to (never seing clear), being sure of all this, and all of the sudden he falls to the ground in knees and hands (four to the floor).
"I could have it all, whenever you are near"
This part is about how he felt with this person, how when he was with her he feels like everything is alllright and all that...
"We'd rent a little world/We'd have a little girl"
This talks about how he had it all planed, he never expected that that wouldnt happend, never though of the possibility of losing her.
I'm having litle problems whith this parts:
"With hand on heart, you right from the start
You taught me to take my part"
"The iron hand did not understand
The plight of the common man"
I couldn't assign them any significant meaning, but maybe they're not as "interpretable" as the rest and they are what they mean...(like, the first only introduces us to the relationship and the second tells how he feels surprised)

@Nordic You're definitely up to something there.

Taking it further, what if it's four to the floor, like when sprinters are going to start a race, ready to go.
