Personally, this song is VERY ambiguous. However, I have my own opinion.

He took it, and left with it because of "something he saw through his head." I'm guessing that means he imagined some other woman would be better than her.
Many people who have cried themselves to sleep after a bad breakup, and they wish they could just stop breathing and end it all. But you don't really have any other choice at that point in your life but to breathe and believe that a better day will come. That's what it means to me, anyway.
I agree that its very ambiguous, but your interpretation is a great one. Many people have events in their lives that are hard so the best thing to do is to just breathe and relax. But a bad breakup is something many, many people can easily identify with.
