in the second sentence, he talks about cold monuments - perhaps the coldness of a gravestone, a coffin or even of a dead body. he would have talked about wanting to kill himself (this is after all grief), or you can also take it to a less extreme emotional thing .. like how a death of a loved one reminds him of how everyone, including himself, will have to die one day:
