This is complex. I think, this song is driven by the concept of fate. Chances coming and going allows you to become who you think you are.

I think he's acknowledging that for each person there is one continuing fate/life (past, present, future) and that chances come along that allow us to affect our fate for the better. In the end I think he is maybe saying that he has been making the best of chances that come along - affecting what his fate/life has always been leading to. The grand finale would be to cut off fate - by taking advantage of the chances he is given.
