I think it's saying that it's okay when we hit the point of hating life, because everyone's got to 'bleed' sooner or later...and if you hold it all in, you're going to start 'burning alters,' or in other words...go crazy.
@stixx_n_strings I know that comment was 11 years ago LOL but I pretty much agree that is the message Ed, though I have a different take on the "burning alters" metaphor/symbolism. Ed (the lead singer who wrote the song) and his brother who is also in the band, were raised in a religious family. Their father was a minister.. Taking that into consideration, along with the many other subtle Christian/religious overtones in many of their other songs, I believe it is very possible that he is saying he thinks she is blaming God for her problems....
