i love this song but i don't think i understand it-- who's jack? and exactly what are the problems ben gibbard's sorting through when he gets home?

i haven't come across any lyric listings of this song online, but i always hear "the wind whipping" instead of ripping, and "when the wheels ceased to spin in my case-like surroundings," instead of incase my surroundings, and "rain-soaked, forgotten remains" instead of rain-soaked and rotten. i'm not sure though. :o)

jack is jack karouc that spelling is wrong i believe he was an older writer... he was ben gibbards idol and if your familiar with the song bixy canyon bridge thats about ben staying with jack in a cabin for a while becuase he was having writers block and he thought it wouldl help him finish writing Narrow Stairs and yeah thats really it

Jack Kerouac is a writer from the pre-hippie counterculture movement known as "the Beats". He is most famous for his novels On the Road, Visions of Cody, The Dharma Burns, and Big Sur. Kerouac died of cirrhosis in 1969, so I don't think that Ben stayed in a cabin with him ever, let alone while he was writing Narrow Stairs. Lol. But you're right on several counts-- Bixby Canyon Bridge was written about Ben's trip to Big Sur and is full of references to Kerouac's writing and life, and Jack Kerouac is Ben's idol.
