ELIAS seems to be dealing with a couple of things,
First, Some one who expects him to achieve, and strive farther then is humanly possible.
Secondly, Is the idea that this person has made him question his own beliefs. He believes that all these things he's been doing make him a man, but the other person disagrees, and therefore, causes ELIAS to doubt himself. That's where the taking chances comes in. He's saying that he'd like to take chances, but his doubts are now holding him back. But the chorus seems to point to his resolution. ''"NOT FOR YOU, YOUR TO HARD TO PLEASE."' So, he's giving up on this person, and going to do things to please himself.
