This song is about the tale of Tristan and Isolde. It's a medieval story when chivalrey and the knight's code are very strong themes. In the story Tristan kills Isolde's finacee and takes her on a ship to Ireland to marry his uncle. She makes life hard for Tristan on the voyage until she realises that he was the one who killed her fiance, she hates him so much, but then he looks lovingly into her eyes and so she takes pity on him. Her mother had taught her to make potions, so she prepares a poison. She asks Tristan for an appology for killing her betrothed, and he offers her his sword, but she says it will violate both of their beliefs, so she offers that they drink to peace, hoping the poison will kill them both. Instead, they fall madly in love with each other... her companion switched the potions.
They meet in the secrets of night where they can be together. Unfortunately King Marke (the guy who was supposed to marry Isolde) finds out and he's pretty mad about it, because Tristan was the one who urged him to seek out a bride and is angered at what disgrace Tristan brought him. So he sets out to find Tristan. Tristan asks Isolde if she will join him in the next life, and she agrees. I think she gives him a potion to keep him alive until she can be with him again, but I'm not sure what happens there. Anyhoo, Marke stabs Tristan, and he is mortally wounded. He dies, but then awakens again because he promised not to go without Isolde. She is the only one who can save him. Marke sees what has happened and decides to bless them. But when Tristan sees Isolde, he tears off his bandages and collapses into her arms. She begs him to stay alive so they can be together a bit longer. However, he dies. So she feels that he is calling her from another world and dies also. Marke gets there too late to help them.
It's a tragic love story and Blind Guardian did a beautiful job capturing it.
