Parents usually think people get depressed because they don't have a wife or a job, and they're just looking out for their children. Children then get extremely upset at the concept that someone thinks what they're doing is somehow wrong, and take extreme offense to the parents. It's a control game.
The problem is that Rivers really is an extremely immature crybaby. If I were his dad and I didn't give a shit about the fact that he was a successful musician, and just looked at how much of a whining, depressed wreck he is, I'd probably tell him to get a life too.
