You don't have to like death metal (we'd preffer if most of you jackasses didn't) but to say it takes no talent is ignorant, and has probbaly never picked up an instrument any more complex than a kazoo.
The reason they mention REM and Pearl Jam along with the Spice girls and crpa like that is because they're both small, underground bands that jumped to major labels and became more commercial. They also represented a shift in the attitudes of the underground scenes, cos initially most bands were in their respective scenes just to make music and earn enough money to survive, but after band like REM and Pearl Jam broke out and achieved commercial success, a lot of bands changed their priorities and sound and tried to make a career out of it.
