to me "the battle" is between the lyricists heart and his head. continue loving whoever after whatever they have done or whatever pain they have put you through(heart) or decide the pain isnt worth it and crush whatever love you still have for them as hard as that may be and get on with your life(head). it seems that the writer listened to his head, maybe after going with his heart a number of times just to find himself in the same spot again and again.
