I'm thinking the mattress and the red sweater are just like nails in the coffin, things to make it hurt even more. Like in the movies when the person's had a bad day, and then some car goes through a puddle and gets them all wet. Just more little things to make it even worse. Like,
"She broke up with you, she hates you, nothing will ever be the same, and by the way, she's not giving you your sweater back."
And I agree, the "it's coming down" parts are about the relationship, not the rain (i never got that before, though! =D)
