heavens my butt. the beauty of song lyrics or any form of lyrical speech is the openess of interpretation- the element of ambiguity. if the stills really wanted their song to solely represent ultra-liberal views on post 911 America, they would become political enthusiasts through their songs. but their songs are not all about the state of a nation nor do all of their songs carry across political innuendo's. i agree that this song emphasizes the imperialistic greeds of the America nation- if you watch the video for this song, you'll see all the band members walking around in NYC with digitalized (animations) of explosions all over -- think, just like 911. the m16, "chemical blast", the stars... all point to America's pro-war antics & how it relates to the America ideology of freedome and peace. yet, at the same time, i could see how the lyrics can be about a failing/failed relationship. like, who could Lola be? can chemical blast also be a biologically-related emotion and feeling in us? "you always said the world would never last" <-- couldn't that also mean the world which a couple in a relationship make, not last? it's definitely good to piece together the obvious evidence/facts, but on a literary level, it could always mean to much more. no one should ever take away one's curiousity to look deeper, to contemplate on all the possibilities.
