Wurby was right, it was the last song recorded for Mellon Collie, however, Billy finished it after Mellon Collie was already in production. He said he though about keeping it around for his next album, but it was in the "Mellon Collie spirit" and thus, he released it as a B-side. Which kind of makes me sad, because the song was absolutely gorgeous, and would have made an excellent ending song for the first disc of Mellon Collie. James' "Take Me Down" simply can't compare..."The Last Song" deserved better than B-side status, but hey, at least for those of us how have heard it, it will remain with us as one of Billy's most emotional and heart-wrenching masterpieces.
