i get a lot of different things from this song. yesterday i was listening to it and i realized it was a story about a hopeless boy in life.
it starts off by showing his desperate drug addiction, and how he tried to get clean, but he just can't take it without being high. in the first verse, it seemed to me that the match he was looking for is an actual match, like a flint, to light his joint ("something to light me up"). he's depressed and he just wants to forget about all the things he's done or hasn't done ("burn the proof of the things i've done"). he goes on to say that he basically gets high everyday so that he can just forget. he skips the hours because he can't remember them. the bag is like a bag of drugs, whatever it is he may be taking. and when you're always blazed, you're not really living. he's just living his "life like somebody's shadow."
and then it seems to me that he's reflecting.. because he has a broken heart to add to his broken soul. he's saying that he tried, but his best wasn't good enough, and that he can't measure up.
he's saying that this realization is helping him to leave everything behind. he knows he has some worth, but the girl can't see it, and just sees him as an object, something that she can use to her benefit (maybe to support her own drug addiction?).
and then he seems to be killing himself. he's leaving town for good. he's doing some travelling (to heaven or hell).
it seems like he's jumping off of her building, and he's free-falling by her window. and he's saying that she could have saved him, if she had wanted to. she could have shown him his own worth. but it's too late now. he's not the cord of a parachute.
that's just the way i saw it.
