This just reminded me a lot of the book Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury). Pretty much line for line. So that would make this about dystopian society.. a society that believes it is perfect (utopian) but really has certain fatal flaws that go almost completely unnoticed.
Lets see.. the people referred to are depressed, yet believe they are happy. An extreme number of people are committing suicide. Those that are alive are more like shells, animals, dead people than someone alive. And their society is completely controlled.. nothing is left optional and no one is given much choice in their life.
