As atdi7777 states, the song comes from growing up in the border. I thought much about the phrase "Count your blessings, you're the lucky one". Well, it depends on the perspective. Being on the US part of the border implies having a better economy, better policemen, etc. Yet somehow i believe that people who grow in the border are a mixture of cultures. I saw them live some days ago in Mexico City, it surprised me that they did not seem to know Spanish. They are a really good band to see live.
