I think this song is about a guy who was led on. He was crazy about her and she acted like she was just as crazy about him. Then one day he realizes that she really doesn't even want a relationship and just wanted to be friends all along (hence this wasted so many nights and again I've wasted so much time on a friend) but he was (too young, too proud) to see that she really didn't feel the same. He thought they were meant for each other. So now he's desperately trying to get back at her by saying it meant nothing to him. In reality it meant the world. He's trying to hurt her like she hurt him with the hope that she TRULY did like him under the surface... just didn't show it the same way.
