To me, this song is about fighting for what you believe in. I also feel that in a way it can be about what we believe in the US... "cannons are blazing shower these moonlit skies, then I remember, and I know why he died."
To me, that line talks about how our forefathers died for us, and we must remember WHY they died. Although I take it in a patriotic way, I feel that it can be taken also in a religious way, or in any case of martyrdom.
