They probably grew up right next door or on the same block, and he would tease her, and she would climb trees with him, and they both thought the other one had cooties, but then puberty hit and they realized that there was much more to climbing trees and playing tag and they realized that there was much more to each other.
The stories at the beginning were probably more like prophicies, so to say, than stories. Their parents probably told each of them that they would wind up together.
The stories closer to the end of the song are about the stories that will be told to their children about how they were childhood sweethearts, and how everyone knew they would wind up together.
