zacster, I'm affraid your comment is a little naive.
Comet248, I agree with most of what you said, but the fact is that she really was quite a bit older than him. He was a "teenage kid," and she was a "lonely widow woman." It takes a while to get over the loss of a spouse, so if she was truly lonely she had to be fairly old. Add to that the fact that she had "hands of leather" and wore "a dress" that "she hadn't worn in quite a while," and you end up facing the fact that the song is about a boy losing his virginity to a woman who was older and more experienced than he was.
Still an incredible song.
@Amanda05@Amanda05, I was a little surprised to read how many are like you and think she was almost elderly, or pretty old anyway. I guess because I knew a couple of young widows, one of whom married an older man when she was 19. He survived cancer in their early years together, but died unexpectedly after 24 years of marriage. So she was early 40’s then. She tried keeping his construction company going, but couldn’t do it. She had several guys in their late teens working odd jobs for her. (In this example, she wouldn’t have had “relations” with...

(In this example, she wouldn’t have had “relations” with a young man though because she was a born again Christian. She asked me about 15 years ago if my husband had any friends we could introduce her to, but she had a long list of musts: No smoking, no drinking, must be a BA Christian…I just said, Nope. He didn’t know anyone who met her criteria).
Your suggestion really changes the story for me, so now I need to listen to the song again! 😉
There’s a song from the 70’s that is similar, but it states “She was 31, I was 17. She knew things about love I’d never seen…” It is by Bobby Goldsburo called “Summer (The First Time).
Garth Brooks song made me remember that song.
