While I think there are probably a few ways to read this, my personal interpretation is that it's a song about love lost. He's moved on now (it's alright, I'm getting over getting mine), but he's still ruminating about what could have been, if only she hadn't, well, kicked it in the sun.
It could be about lost opportunity in the music biz too, sure. It's just that the beginning seems so intimate, it strikes me as being about love.
