ok maybe we have a different definition of the war on drugs. the kind that Fifteen describes is definitely a crime against humanity. however the war on drugs doesn't just take place in california. where i'm from, the war on drugs helps keep them out of schools and playgrounds. there is no three strike penalties, addicts are not stuck in jail, there are treatment programs, where they can try to improve their lives. there are so many instances when a user has been forced to "wake up" and realize what's going on when confronted with the consequences. that doesn't happen if you ignore the problem. i know there are multiple and complex issues in this argument, and I would probably say we're on the same page. but for jeff ott to deem an entire effort to crackdown on drugs as racist...while obviously true in many cases...is an overgeneralization. still i think in most areas it was a massive failure that led to racism, homelessness, and mass disenfranchisement of society.
