I'd say having a repetoire as deep as U2's would leave you to the likelihood of doing something that sounds simliar. i'd say in some cases it could be intentional for the purpose of concerts. If you make a good riff, use it again in another song as an allusion and it's a great way to tie two songs together live when you're jamming out. Bono def doesn't have to prove himself to anyone on any front, especially not musical orginiality. He's got the lyrics, the voice, the stage presence, and importantly, real live social action.
