Lyric discussion by colinclarke

By far one of my favourite songs off Saturate, I see this song as describing a long-running relationship that's gone cold and is ending, and the singer not wanting it to end, but also knowing that it has to end. This is my interpretation of the whole song (of course, many other interpretations are possible)

(Official lyrics from hollywoodrecords.go.com/breakingbenjamin/) WELL I KNOW YOU DON'T KNOW THE REASON AND IT'S COLD A SIGN OF THE SEASON

  • At this stage of the relationship, it's gone cold, devoid of love, and neither the singer nor his girlfriend knows how it got this way CUZ YOU'RE OLD, BATTERED AND BEATEN
  • In the singer's eyes, his girlfriend is old and worn out, since he's been with her so long (one could also take this as a hint at an abusive relationship, but I wouldn't read too far into that) AND WE'LL GROW TIL WE HIT THE CEILING
  • I take this line as kind of sarcastic, as in when couples say "We'll grow together, we'll get through this." It's like saying "Yeah right, we'll grow together until we hit the ceiling, it won't do any good." YEAH
  • To me the chorus illustrates the reluctance to leave a relationship that's become comfortable and normal, but accepting that it must be done WELL I'LL BE BETTER
  • The singer saying that he better himself, make things right GET AWAY
  • Even though the singer doesn't want the relationship to end, he knows that he and his girlfriend have to "get away" and break things off SEND A LETTER BOMBS AWAY
  • I think this refers to sending the dreaded "breakup" letter and "bombing" his comfortable life into chaos

YOU'RE COVERED IN MY SKIN I COULDN'T IMAGINE ANYONE ELSE

  • They've been together so long, it's like being in each others' skin, and he can't imagine being with anyone else I'M OFF FOR THE WEEKEND
  • Taking this as part of "I'm off for the weekend, let's use that time to patch things up, we can fix it", another wish for the relationship to get better and not end I COULDN'T IMAGINE WHY YOU WOULD SAVE YOURSELF
  • He's saying he can't imagine why his girlfriend would leave to save herself from this relationship (but as the rest of the song shows, he can)

WELL IT'S GONE AND IT'S NOT RETURNING

  • The essence of the relationship is gone, and it's not coming back (it's all over) AND YOUR CLOTHES AND PICTURES ARE BURNING
  • She wants to break up with him (or has already) and he's burning all of her things that she left at his place (this'll sound oddly familiar to many people) CUZ YOU'RE OLD, BATTERED AND BEATEN AND WE'LL GROW TIL WE HIT THE CEILING

I think you have the best description of the song..... and yeah I pretty much agree with what you say about it.
