OK this might sound messed up, but I think that he's talking about the glamour hollywood and how people forget their pasts and who they really are and he is realizing that "everywhere I put my foot down it's another concrete block waiting for me" and how people are so self important like that they think that the ground is walking on them instead of the other way around....just a guess
