I think his dad or bono himself had something that really affected him with a relationship that may have turned him away from God, when he says FINGERS STILL RED WITH THE PRICK OF AN OLD ROSE. But hes learning to to keep going and knowing that he has to press on with life. He says, WELL A HEART THAT HURTS, IS A HEART THAT BEATS, meaning that hes hurt and that lets him know hes alive and can move on, but he sees things drawing to the end by saying CAN YOU HEAR THE DRUMMER SLOWING?.
