i think the shadowlands would be that place you go to after loss. where everything is just a shadow to your eyes, like its always on the periphery. the first verse just says that she had a rough life. then she's gone, and he's asking god to take care of her, and saying while he takes care of her he'll be forsaken in a hotel room with roaches. he recognizes that "some people never find a love" and he knows that he did, so he "just can be a man" while he mourns in the shadowlands. at least thats my take.
@swallowedthefly It is. That's what I called the year after I got divorced. It was a dark, murky, lonely time with moments where I felt like I didn't know which way was up. But I'm so thankful for that time, and thankful not to be in it anymore.
