In the end, you find out that he never avenged "Clarissa" by burning her attackers. It was merely a dream of revenge had by him in his jail cell. I am guessing that he was there when Clarissa (his lover) was raped and murdered, and was taken into custody so both of them "would burn on the morrow". Amazing lyrics. Especially the end. Damn.
