Cover art for Buddy lyrics by Lemonheads, The

It was originally called "Drug Buddy" on the first release of Shame About Ray. When they did the next pressing of the album (when Mrs Robinson was added to the end) the name got changed to "Buddy" because radio stations wouldn't play it because it had "drug" in the title.

It's about scoring drugs on King Street in Newtown (suburb of Sydney).

I very much doubt that they are singing about King St. in Newtown/Enmore. I mean, King St. has got to be a pretty common street name and the band is from Boston in the U.S., not Sydney.

I have no evidence that they aren't singing about King St in Newtown, I just think that it's not very likely.

You are dead right about the name change though. It's listed as "Drug Buddy" on my copy of Shame About Ray.

I just remembered that the Lemonheads often collaborate with the Sydney based band "Smudge" (great band BTW. It's well worth tracking their stuff down if you haven't heard of them) so perhaps it's not as unlikely as I first thought.

@iliketoeaticecream This is more a comment to the comment by @tvsinesperanto. Unlikely as it seems, I am positive I read an interview with Evan where he said he was specifically referencing Sydney. I remember because up to that point I had no idea that one of the band (Nic Dalton) was an Australian or that Evan had been spending so much time in Sydney.
