Since I have had this ID on Netgoth around the time VnV wrote this. I will always feel this is "my" song sure other people feel the same way about their favourite songs. So to me it's about the loss of myself to depression. It's about finding a home, somewhere to belong, a group of people of like mind and thoughts. Also about finding a soul mate someone who you can love and be loved in return no matter how much of a mess you are. First time I ever heard this I could do nothing but cry. Even now hearing it is cathartic and spell binding.
