I think it's along the lines of what Mr T. suggested about it basically being directly about masturbation , excess masturbation or some other sad sexual vice .... but more than that it may be getting at what's behind all that....feeling unable to control oneself, feeling to weak to overcome vices of the flesh, desperation .....and the beautiful ending is saying these addictions of the flesh are a tragedy, a waste of a holy spirit, but even despite the dirtyness and bruising the spirit remains beautiful and holy.
