He's was learning how to cook free base, not speed. Free base is when you take cocaine and water, put in a spoon, add pinch of baking soda, boil the mix with a lighter or matches under the spoon. An off white paste forms and floats on the top of the water, it is scraped off the top of the water with a knife, dried and smoked as a pure form of cocaine leaving impurities at the bottom of the spoon :)
