I agree about the line.
In the "best of..." booklet the line of "tangled necklace of pearls" music is described as the feeling of a dizzy love for life and a resentment of mortality at the same time, which i think is a true summary. The world and life is a beautiful string of brilliant moments however the necklace is tangled ans sometimes we do not see life as an amazing thing.
The singer is trying to show this to the person he is writing about and finding it a hard task as this person wants to "escape".
