It's a lament of a relationship he used to have, where everything was great, and she helped him through tough times("You used to push back the darkness like a floodlight") But she left, and now he feels deserted and wants that relationship back, but all he has is his drinking to numb the pain(Saying he doesn't mind to spend more on whiskey these days, because he needs it more) He tries to ignore the problem, but realizes unless he confronts her about it he'll always be depressed and he just wants to be near her, and have her love, but not in a sexual way(he even says he'll sleep on the floor). yet according to her preditctions in the lyrics("You see the future and I agree. We've agreed, tonight's not happening.") that he can't have her back in his current state
Then he tries to stop drinking for either her sake, or for the sake of his own depression, but then realizes he can still drink and have a good time without her("With no anesthetic you're found to be sore. But tonight I'll be drinking all peaceful and warm")
So then he gets out of his rut and makes one more attempt to mend the bridges between him and the girl. Saying that nobody knows what the future holds - thus canceling out her earlier prediction that they can't get back together. It's a very hopeful song, and he changes from his depressed state initially into a cheerful one at the end.
Sorry that was long, but just for the fact there were no comments I felt obligated to do this song justice. And I'll hope you note the lyrics I mentioned are a little different than the ones posted above, but I copied mine straight out of the CD book. So the ones above may need amended.
