Clearly this is about a greedy dude, someone obsessed with money. 'Bread' is slang for money. There are references to 'flithy money', 'gotta make a million', etc.
Its kinda ironic that Metallica would cover this song since they are on of the richest bands in the world, and have a problem with . I just saw the movie 'Some Kind of Monster', and Lars was selling some of his art collection. Pieces were selling for a few million here and there.
And he has a problem with people downloading a few free songs...
Good point vilenin. I also appreciate the irony of this song (as well as 'Battery'... 'go against the grain until the end') .
But Breadfan was originally released as a B side to a Master of Puppets single, before Metallica was really mainstream.
IMO Metallica changed a lot after Cliff Burton died (he died while they were touring on the Master of Puppets tour). Honestly I don't like anything after Master of Puppets but I am glad for them that they have achieved the success they desired.

Lars does not have a problem with free mp3s at all. If you watch the movie Global Metal by Sam Dunn there is an interview with Lars. There were some fans in the movie that apologized for downloading illegal mp3s, but it was there only access to metal music, metal cds were illegal in there country. Sam asked Lars what he thought about it he said "I think its great" , "its the way to share music."
