Obviously refers to Hernando Cortez, the Spaniard who conquered Mexico, but on a deeper level it refers to a loss of innocence ("Hate was just a legend/And war was never known" until Cortez arrived). Not typical Dave, it almost has a Guns 'N Roses ring to it, but a great song.
