To me this song's message seems to be "enjoy this while it lasts, cause it won't last long" ("too good to last"). Don't kid yourself, nothing will last forever no matter how good. The singer is at a point where he is too old to dream (won't fool himself into believing this love, or anything else so good, will last forever), and at the same time too young to care (although he understands it won't last long, he doesn't obsess over this). So he has achieved a kind of awakening that allows him to live in the present without growing up too fast and without embracing the past.

This is exactly what I think. But all of it with an resignment vibe, a sad vibe. Like he accepts this life's ephimeral and nothing lasts. He feels sad about it and can't help feeling like that, but accepts it and is willing to live on.
