You see people getting killed all around you so you can't predict the future seein who will live and who will die.
WHen you can't hear the sound of giving up people are still dying .
When you're stuck in the middle of a war i dont' think you have any hope anymore when you see people dying on both sides
And the little things that's aren't even real are keeping warm but they keep him sane. and it thik it almost some how sounds like a WWi story when one would fight in a trench.
