If you buy her album and listen to it, you'll be able to distinguish her from Avril a lot more easily.
Katy imo is not a pop princess. I would place her more in the grunge/rock/pop arena. Sometimes she is light. Sometimes she is heavy. But the thing I notice in her music is how raw and sharp she can get.
Also, the big difference is Katy is a poet first, and then a singer/songwriter. Her songs are very poetic and can be very ambiguous... and chocked full of analogies (which I LOVE!)
This song obviously made it to the radio and MTV first because it is the popiest song. A lot of artists like to take a song and give it a pop feel or make it sort of a "here I am, and here was my life" type song and this is it.

But a very good song nonetheless!
