I love this song! The name "First Straw" caught my attention ever since I saw it on 311's site. This is the meaning I get from it: You know how there is that phrase "that's the last straw!" Well this song is about a dating relationship between a guy and his girlfriend. Too often we don't resolve relationship problems when they first arise, we wait until the problem becomes so big that we cant take it anymore and then we say "that's the last straw that broke my back" and we explode with anger and ruin a good relationship and then break up. In this song, Nick and SA explain a better way to handle problems in a dating relationship. They say to watch out for the "First Straw", or the first little problem that arises, and resolve it while it's still small, rather than let it become a bigger problem. That is what keeps a perfectly good loving relationship from going wrong, and I would agree with Hexum that there is no reason for getting to the last straw stage at all.
