Cover art for Inches From Life lyrics by MxPx

This is one of my favorite MxPx songs...it def. rocks!

Well, it starts off by talking about "something wrong inside of us," "a narrow mind a hardened heart." I see this as talking about our sin problem, all humans are born sinners, turned from God. It's our natural state.

The second verse goes on to say how frustrated the lyricist is with this problem, and how despite the fact that "we are taught to go along, we need to figure out what might be wrong."

"You oughta know you can be inches from life and never live at all." Without God, life is empty. It ultimately has no meaning. You can be soo close to life, but you will never know what real life is while you are apart from God. And pride can keep people from turning to God, that is their "downfall" that they are only living "inches from life."

I love verse 4: "Could it be there's something real, not always known but you can feel, the presence of an absolute, that our lives can't substitute." There is something real, God does exist. There is more to life than pursuing happiness. There is "the presence of an absolute," God, "that our lives can't substitute." There is no substitute for God. He is the only one that can save us, and allow us to know what true life is.

But thats just my take. What does anyone else think this song is talking about?
