this song makes me think of that game with the little ball barings and you both shoot at the little disk trying to get it into the goal. he is getting tossed around by people. pretending to be the opposite.. prolly for attention.
Here's my take on the meaning of Burning Bright - Shinedown........
Here's my take on the meaning of Burning Bright - Shinedown........
I think he has been 'groomed' to think, and is 'used' to, or has 'accepted' the fact, that throughout his life, he has grown accustomed to 'accepting' peoples ideals of HIS 'perceived worth' or 'value', by masking all of that negativity behind a brilliant, self-created mask or curtain. Survival mode. He is definitely not proud...

Survival mode. He is definitely not proud of the "given label" that particular mentors/influences that really quite innocently have tried to convince him that he was/or he is still. He sometimes considers "somehow" changing those 'old perceptions" & the old ways' of doing things, because he recognizes that those "labels' given to him, may be not 100% correct', and is thinking that those 'labels' may have to go., He often reflects on, & 'reconsiders' those labels and his self-worth and he recognizes, on & off that maybe, just maybe, he is more "valuable'' than what some people think and the labels he's been given.
He often thinks about "changing", but really just doesn't know how to go about it. …..… yet ….
The situation to me, is sadly similiar to a 'beaten dog syndrome', where the innocent victim has been beaten into submission, and has been groomed, taught & convinced, through his life experiences, and knows 'full well' of his 'apparent' role in life and what he "can and cannot" BECOME in life, and what he can offer the world, as other people "see it" Although a little bit broken from his past experiences, , he IS a survivor, and although the past has played a huge part in who he IS today, it does not accurately DEFINE who he really is, what he has to give, and what his true 'value' really is. When 'outsiders' attempt to see inside the 'real him' he is not comfortable with that...thus the 'close my eyes'....... he much prefers 'the darkness' where he is not fully revealed, and where it is a 'safer place' & a more sheltered existance or choice, where people really cannot get to know the real him, and he can continue to attempt to stay-safe,and 'alright' behind that self created mask of survival.
When asked to 'come to the table' with something.....he will…and although he is not 100% comortable with that, he will do it, without hesitation & with unparalled conviction & belief ! .
Though he may have been wounded in the past, those injuries have pretty much healed over time, and all that remains is that "permanent scar"..."permanent reminder" Not a emergency situation and NOT a bleeding, open wound anymore.. Although not comfortable expressing his true inner feelings, he WILL and really WANTS to, providing he feels that it is SAFE to do so. But really, what is a 'safe place' ?? He doesnt know the answer to this....at least...right now...Basically, he REALLY wants to start "living free" but is hesitant to trust anyone completely, as the only person he thinks he can fully trust and rely on, is himself.
